Coincidentally, a friend of mine who teaches art/english at the high
school level showed me a beginner's book yesterday on sketching human
anatomy. Interestingly, you focus on the different parts of the body
using primitive templates. For example, for head sketches, you begin by
drawing one large circle for the top part of the head and place a smaller
circle about 2/3 of the way down underneath the larger one. Both circles
are then quartered with straight lines for asymmetrical guides later on.
Seems like converting this technique to 3D wouldn't be that difficult.
Position some spheres, boolean, then metaform. Hell, it's worth a try.
